The History of Beer - from the stone age to the craft beer revolution

He was a wise man who invented beer" Plato

Imagine the first beer. The first beer buzz. It must've been a magical experience given our ancestors' single-minded pursuit to build civilization around this malty slice of heaven.

Well, you won't have to imagine it any longer. James tells the full story from before recorded history to the very beer you'll be drinking as you learn about the history of the world's most popular alcoholic beverage.

Rage Against the Machines! - A Talk w/ James Whittaker

As Big Tech recklessly pursues a goal of Artificial General Intelligence (capability on par with, and as an alternative to, human intelligence), their tech-bro leaders are simultaneously spouting dire warnings about the very technology that is eating capital and spewing greenhouse gases at an unsustainable rate. All this without any of them being able to paint a future vision of the technology that is actually good for humanity. Small wonder they are buying up private islands and fortifying compounds in faraway New Zealand to shield themselves from the world they are creating for the rest of us.

This talk is a wake up call and a call to arms. It's time to fight back!

*NOTE: Location has officially been changed to SIDE HUSTLE LOCAL in Bothell.

The A.I. Monologues: with James Whittaker

In this talk, James Whittaker presents the case for AI being our best (and perhaps only) way out of the dysfunction of modern society. To accomplish this, he will tell the origin story of extra-human intelligence with approachable science and zero bullshit. He then delves into the utopian vision of AI creating a world of leisure and abundance before shattering that vision as impractical (history is clear on this point: humans cannot be trusted to do the right thing). We end up in a familiar place where technology creates both evil and good in measures. The great challenge of mankind is tipping these scales in favor of good and the guardrails, laws and safeguards necessary to do this are discussed.

You’ll learn:

How knowledge escaped its human host and found itself in the clutches of machines

How machine “brains” work and why they outperform human gray matter

Why AI is so much more powerful than ordinary software

How AI can lessen human toil and unleash our creativity

How AI can optimize human well being, both mental and physical

How AI can create wealth that eliminates the need for all taxation

What life could be like as we cohabitate with AI
